Stricter norms for colleges of traditional medicine

India has 499 colleges teaching the Indian system of medicine — 311 colleges for Ayurveda, Unani and Siddha and 188 colleges teaching homeopathy — which will have to follow the new registration system from 2011 academic year.

In order to ensure the quality of education to the students of Indian system of medicines and prevent mushrooming growth of Ayurveda, Siddha and Unani (ASU) and Homoeopathic Colleges, the Centre has issued stricter parameters for granting permission for setting up or upgrading the existing colleges.

New grading system for medical colleges

The Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University has launched a new grading system for over 290 medical, dental, Indian medicine and allied health sciences colleges affiliated to it. Colleges will be evaluated based on infrastructure, administration, finance, quality of academic input, placement opportunity and student care. Dr. Sudha Seshayyan, registrar of the university, in a circular to principals of all colleges said, the university has proposed to device a robust rating system, to rank the affiliated colleges based on the rating system and to derive set of action points for colleges to improve their performance standard on various evaluated parameters. The survey will start on May 1 and will go on for 11 weeks.

Reformation of Siddha Medicine Education in Srilanka

Development of the Educational Sector is a subject that has received great attention and importance.

Plans and objectives relating to the development of the educational sector is extensively elaborated in the Mahinda Chintana covering five pages under the caption ‘Enhancing knowledge and virtues’ with sub-headings ‘National education program’, ‘University to all program’ and ‘Livelihood skills program’. Accordingly new multi-storied school buildings have been built all over the country and at the same time reconstructing and renovating the school buildings destroyed by the Tsunami disaster in the coastal areas.
